“Destroy this sanctuary and in three days I will raise it up.”
John 2:13-22
It was made lawful to have a marketplace in the Temple’s outer court by the authority of the high priest Caiphas, And the temple guards protected its practice. Jesus goes to the Temple and reacts angrily against this practice. In this passage, we see a “higher” authority of Jesus, who overturns the market tables. “Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!” Jesus, as the Son of God, shows his power and authority. Because these ritualistic practices were far away from the hearts of the people. This is the question we need to ask ourselves: “Does the piety and devotional practices we fulfill connect with how we live in our everyday life? Are our liturgical practices and devotions sincere and connected towards a Christian way of life?
The Jews question Jesus’ authority to overturn the market tables. Jesus then refers to his own resurrection: he will be the new Temple where we can offer true worship. Let us ask Jesus today, to face those areas in our life, when our hearts are far away from God and ask if our piety is true worship.
