“I was faultless according to the Law; but without knowing Christ I was nothing.”

Philippians 3:3-8

In today’s reading, St Paul recognises how his old way of life was nothing since he did not know Jesus Christ. Paul was a Jew and a Pharisee, and the Pharisees were known for observing the Law down to the tiniest detail. If observing the Law could make a person perfect, then Paul would have been without fault. However, Paul recognises that this was nothing in comparison to knowing Jesus. Everything he used to think would bring him closer to God, he now saw as a barrier. The former advantages were now seen as disadvantages. Everything is outweighed by the knowledge of Jesus, who in his mercy and love, encountered him personally and uniquely. Jesus desires the same for us also. What about us? Do we recognise what we owe to Christ, and that we are nothing without him? Today we can dialogue with Jesus about this, as we give thanks for all that he has done.
